Perfect Lemonade

This heart healthy lemonade is perfect for a refreshing drink on a hot summer day - or anytime.  Anytime, because of the high health benefits of lemons.

Lemons are considered one of the "super foods" for all their many health benefits.  For the heart, lemons help lower blood pressure and increases the levels of HDL (good cholesterol).  Lemons are also an antioxidant which deactivates the free radicals and may help prevent stroke and cardiovascular diseases.

Recipe Ingredients:

1 cup sugar (if desired reduce to 3/4 cup or for tarter reduce to 1/2 cup)

1 cup water

1 cup lemon juice

3 to 4 cups cold water (for diluting)

Recipe Instructions:

Remember the starting proportions - 1 cup of sugar, 1 cup of water, and 1 cup of lemon juice.

Heat the sugar and water in a small saucepan until the sugar is dissolved completely.

Then while sugar is dissolving, use a juicer to extract the juice from 4 to 6 lemons, enough for one cup of juice.

Add the juice and the sugar water to a pitcher.

Add 3 to 4 cups of cold water, more or less to the desired strength.

Best if refrigerated for 30 to 40 minutes.

If the lemonade is too sweet for taste, add a little more straight lemon juice to it.

Add ice and serve.

If desired, garnish with mint and a slice of lemon.

Makes 6 servings.
